Disability Insurance Guide

Everything you need to know about protecting your specialized income.

What is Disability Insurance?

Disability insurance is designed to replace a major portion of your income when you are unable to work due to illness or injury. It serves as a financial safety net so you can continue paying for housing, investments, and living expenses without liquidating retirement savings.

While many people believe disabilities are mostly caused by catastrophic accidents, the reality is that chronic illnesses like musculoskeletal disorders, cancer, and heart disease are the leading causes of long-term work absences.

Why True Own-Occupation is Crucial

For specialized professionals like surgeons, trial attorneys, and executives, standard disability coverage is inadequate. If a surgeon suffers a hand tremor, a generic policy might deny benefits if they can still teach.

A "True Own-Occupation" policy pays full benefits if you cannot perform the material duties of your specific specialty, even if you choose to work in another profession or business.

Waiting Period (Elimination Period)

The time you must be disabled before benefits begin (typically 90 days, with options from 30 to 365 days).

Benefit Period

How long benefits are paid — options typically range from 2 years, 5 years, 10 years, or up to retirement age (e.g., age 65/67).

Non-Cancellable & Guaranteed Renewable

Guarantees the insurer cannot increase premiums or cancel coverage as long as you pay premiums on time.

Future Increase Option (FIO)

Allows you to purchase additional coverage as your earnings increase without undergoing medical underwriting again.
